Didier Drogba tipped to Leave

Since Stamford Bridge confirmed the imminent departure of 32 year-old Nicolas Anelka and rumours appeared regarding the future of 33 year-old Didier Drogba, Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas has denied claims that he is getting rid of the older members of his squad. Drogba has not been a central figure this season, and the London club appear reluctant to extend his contract past the year it has remaining, despite the Ivorian’s wish to continue playing at Chelsea for the foreseeable future.

This season has seen Daniel Sturridge become the first choice striker under Andre Villas Boas, with the other attacking options – Drogba, Anelka and 50 million pound Torres – having to wait their turn to partner the youngster up front. The Chelsea manager was quick to explain Drogba’s string of absences as being down to an injury, but he was not favoured even when fully fit. The veteran striker has recently enjoyed a period of better form with 2 goals against Valencia but even if he starts getting played regularly during December, he will leave for the African Cup of Nations in January, which will change things once again.

Drogba’s team mate Anelka has recently confirmed his move to Chinese MLS giants Shanghai Shenhua, and the club also say that Drogba is welcome to join his friend if he wants to. “Drogba is an excellent player,” Shenhua director Zhou said. “We got in touch with him two weeks ago. From our club’s perspective, we have this to say: If he is willing to come, we will definitely welcome him.” The recently promoted Chinese club Dalian Aerbin have also expressed interest in Drogba, saying “Money is not the problem. Drogba is still one of the most popular soccer stars in the world, though he will be 34-years-old.” If the Ivorian decides to follow Anelka, the premiership will be sorry to see the Chelsea player leave, who has provided such entertainment and exhibitions of skill through his years here in England.
