JOURNALIST CONFIRMS MAGPIES INTEREST IN OSINHEM

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was a subject of interest from some Premier League teams as reported in the media. The two names mentioned in line with the new Didier Drogba during the final days of the recently concluded January transfer window were Arsenal and Newcastle United. The Napoli attacker has always been compared with Chelsea legend Didier Drogba and Premier League teams including the Magpies were keen to sign him last month, but they were not successful. The interest of Newcastle United in the Super Eagles of Nigeria star was confirmed by Italian journalist Fabio Santini in a chat with 7 Gold shortly after the transfer window ended earlier this week.

According to the quotes from the journalist as revealed by Calcio Napoli 1926, Osimhen was wanted by the Magpies. In addition to confirming the interest of Newcastle United in the player, Santini said that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted nothing less than €100m (£83m) for the former VFL Wolfsburg and Lille attacking talent who has similarities with Ivorian football icon Didier Drogba.

Osimhen is seen as one of the best young strikers in world football and he has a decent record in front of goal since his transfer to Napoli at the start of last season. He has 19 goals in 46 matches for Napoli in all competitions since his move to the club in the summer of 2020.

Newcastle United were linked with a lot of strikers in the final days of last month’s transfer window with the club keen to add more firepower to their squad for the second half of the season. They had already signed New Zealand international Chris Wood from fellow Premier League strugglers Burnley for £25m which was his release clause. The Magpies wanted to add one more striker to their squad, but they were unable to do so before the transfer window ended on Monday night.
